Over the last year, I’ve often heard Brett Hagler from New Story say, “Courage is in far shorter supply than genius”. It is a statement that has come to resonate with me deeply.
Henry and I didn’t so much “start” AsOne as we stumbled into it—guided more by conviction than confidence. It began as a simple desire to say “yes” to Jesus and to meaningfully offer our lives to those living in poverty across the rural communities of East Africa.
Even as 2025 marked ten years of AsOne’s work alongside communities in Uganda and a decade of tremendous strides, we still feel a restless longing to be “forever improving.” In our world, the poor are rarely given the gift of constant improvement. I often reflect on the words of the prophet Isaiah: “If you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness.” This is our North Star—a commitment to being relentlessly attached to finding what truly works for the sake of others.
The last decade has birthed the story we call AsOne today, but it has been built through nothing short of iterative acts of faithfulness. In many ways, we are still stumbling into who we are. We strive for excellence, yet we hold it with grace, knowing that God is the master builder and we are simply His ministers.
Our hope is to see our true quest come to life: Ugandans empowering Ugandans. We are moving toward a future where our work isn't built on "beneficiaries," but on participants —where the people of Uganda author their own story of transformation. We are privileged that philanthropy and your generosity can catalyze this story, but our goal is for Uganda’s people and currency to fuel it into the future.
In all things, we pray that God would be glorified through our efforts and yours.
To Him who can do immeasurably more than we could ever ask or imagine.
Sincerely,
Andrew DeVaney & Henry Iwumbwe
