Quarterly Update | Q3, 2023

Last year we set a strategic goal to develop five communities with all dimensions of our four pronged model in place: a school, medical center, farm, and businesses/ vocational training center and make them fully-operating.

We’ve been running full steam ahead at this vision for the last year and a half and things did not slow down during Q2 for our work and team in Uganda! It has been an incredibly exciting year filled with remarkable stories of impact, empowerment, and God’s Kingdom marching forward in Uganda. It’s been a deep joy to watch AsOne take shape and to see the community of people God has orchestrated around the world to make it happen.

My commitment in 2023 has been to enjoy the process and the people God has put in my life.

Here is an update on all the work taking place.

Mayuge School Progress

Back in late February, we broke ground on our newest school in Matuba, Mayuge. This Nursery & Primary School will have capacity for 600+ students, 30 or more local staff, and will become the center for our work of transformation for the District of Mayuge. It’s a huge focus of ours in 2023 to see this school built and operating by the start of next year.

We’ve made a lot of progress in the last three months! And we’re about the begin roofing our large 15,000 sq. ft. building as we also look to start our dining hall in that building. We are thankful for everyone that has helped make this project possible!

Kaberamaido High School

To start this quarter we had four empty acres and three months later we have almost three roofed buildings for the new AsOne High School in Kaberamaido. Starting next year we’ll hire 15+ new employees, and we are expecting a starting enrollment of 200 students at this new High School! We have the same engineer running this project that built our high school in Namayemba. Across the country we have nearly 100-300 construction workers at any given time working on different AsOne projects.

Namayemba Clinic Expansion & Bakery Move

At the start of Q2 we renovated our (old) Namayemba Bakery at our headquarters and expanded our Health Center to provide additional maternity services! Since then we’ve started delivering babies, opened up more patient rooms, and have served hundreds of patients. Currently, our bakery is in a temporary location while we are renovating a newly purchased building in Namayemba town for the bakery to operate! The bakery has seen improved business demand since moving locations — they also started producing new products! Here is the location of the new bakery!

New Tailoring Facility in Idudi

Thanks to generous donors we were able to purchase a new property in the community of Idudi that will become a tailoring production & training center. We will have 4 full-time staff and provide certified vocational training services for 20 youth in the community each year. This facility will also help make all AsOne school uniforms in eastern Uganda — in 2024 we are anticipating over 2,000 students just on the eastern side of the country! Here is the location of the future Tailoring Center.

Immersion Trips are off!

In May & June we had four different groups of travelers visit Uganda: Dakota Wesleyan University, Sioux Falls Christian Schools, Seeds of Change, and Western Christian High School. It has been delightful to hear the words people have shared about our team in Uganda and the work taking place. It has been fantastic to see our AsOne family around the world grow. One of the travelers said this:

"AsOne is making a positive impact all over Uganda. I was lucky enough to see a glimpse of the affect AsOne is having on the country of Uganda a month ago. Ugandans are able to take local ownership of projects and businesses which has a positive impact on the people of Uganda. Locals are able to see the difference that they are making in communities across the country. Ugandans empowering Ugandans is truly a motto that AsOne staff and other locals have learned to live out.”

A lot of people have made this story possible, and it is special to see new relationships being made.

Events in October & November

In the late fall our AsOne events are coming back in Sioux Falls, SD and Englewood, CO! We will be hosting our South Dakota event at the Museum of Visual Materials on October 26th and our Denver event at the beautiful Thomas Garage in Englewood on November 2nd. The websites for each event can be found at: asoneafrica.org/events — we would love for you to register and have you hear more about all the work taking place in Uganda!
